For the most part, the laws that govern me are the ones I wrote for myself. Once in a while, in the sacred times and places of this world, I am granted contact with a deeper order and reminded that the only Rule that isn't merely guideline is the natural law of the physical universe.

Standing in the full shadow of the moon, I experience surrender to the cosmos. The the vault of heaven opens and its secrets spill. Intellectually, geometrically, I can place the positions of the three celestial bodies in my mind. But on the brink of totality, when the eye of the black sun opens, when even the simple things you think you can count on become untrue -- shadows cast on the ground are circular -- the dim of night in the middle of the day -- I feel the animal panic. The birds take flight at once -- the horses whinny -- the dogs bark and pace around. My ancient mammalian brain recognizes the divine disturbance, the moment of Revelation. My hair stands on end. Old men praise the Lord and hold their wives tightly. Children are screaming at the top of their lungs in excitement and terror.

Around the pitch dark eye, the glow of the solar corona -- it appears not as a neat circular outline, but as giant, million mile, multi-armed filaments stretching away from the sun, some bigger than the main disc. My familiar sun, the circular star that I can count on to show up every day, a profoundly alien spaceship embedded in the sky. This was always the true nature of our precious Sol -- the only thing that's changed is my ability to see it, with the familiar heat of the main disc perfectly blocked briefly by our moon. My leaky abstractions break. My carefully built heuristics, rewritten.

For a moment, one fraction of a heartbeat, my mind and soul are one with our beloved universe. I feel the Earth in orbit, I feel the moon rotating around it, I feel the ocean of magma moving as it flows around the planet and the corresponding slow spin of the magnetosphere pulsing at the same time. I feel the entire solar system in motion and for once, I am not a mere spectator with my nose pressed up against the glass but instead a part of ānanda tāṇḍava, the celestial dance.

The shadow of the moon passes over and through me, and cleanses me of my ignorance. A dark enlightenment; umbral Rapture; the world grows monochromatic and cold; like all true art, it thrills and discomforts me. All of this, everything I love and hold dear, everything I hate, is running on the great physics engine governing reality. From simple mathematical rules, endless forms most beautiful and wonderful. This is the truth of things -- matter flows from place to place, and momentarily comes together to be me. I am not a free-floating mind, but a brain in a body. There is comfort here -- for all my worries about whether I am doing the right or wrong thing, there is another truth, that I am pulled along by the same clockwork that defines the motions of the cosmos. Both my deeds and misdeeds are finite and preordained.

All metaphysics must incorporate physics. I am reminded that the vast majority of human delusions are not higher spiritual truths but less beautiful and less true than the iron law of the mathematical universe. There is nothing I could have done to prevent the clockwork of the moon overhead, as it has done since the divine watchmaker set it in motion, and so it will continue long after my bloodline is dust and humanity has either moved off-world or died.

The four minute window is closing. Time is running out, and with it, my connection to the transcendent. As the sun takes its first peek from behind the moon, strange shadows move across the ground and the warm light returns; the springs unwinds. I return to the nominal world, the world whose truth is defined by the people around me. When the sun makes its reappearance there is jubilant cheering. People break out into dance, children laugh. Where did these tears in my eyes come from? The reverse energy of totality infects the crowd. Just as the sun is the giver of all life on Earth, to experience its return is to experience the rebirth of the world.

The platonic sprites wink at us, the careful plan of a celestial clock. An Earthly total solar eclipse is a cosmic anomaly; the sun is 400 times farther away than the moon, and the width of its disc 400 times larger than the moon's. Our very own precise miracle, at this cosmic sliver in time and space. For as long as the race of man has been around, the moon has been painting the world with great sweeps of totality a hundred miles wide, several thousand miles long, like an inscrutable god granting random Revelation to small swathes of humanity. How did the Ancients cope with these brushes with the cosmos? Likely just as I have done; a jolt of inspiration and then the slow slide back to cooking fires and the hunt. It's an important gift of the lineage of Man that cosmic truth doesn't drive us to Lovecraftian insanity, that it leaves us nourished and reborn. A reminder then, for when various puppeteers call you to your routines and subroutines, when guilt and doubt gnaw at you, to find that truth which will not unmake you, that even your mechanical fragility makes you part of the divine.

Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
From the day we arrive on the planet

Our brains are hooked up to a million petabyte neural network. Through an ever-widening pipe, we experience uplift to something else. We strap on the mask of God: the ghost in the machine. Transcendence -- becoming everything that touches other things, feeling the fabric of space being bent by matter. The barriers between Men fade; the ego and the soul melt. Loneliness and sorrow are things of the past.

It is unclear what happens next -- perhaps we stretch unburdened like the Titan Atlas across every galaxy, tend to life growing among the stars. Perhaps that sort of aspiration is a result of a psychological deficit soothed by infinite connection and we don’t go anywhere at all. A remarkable and joyous future, one where "humanity" has won. But the human has been erased. Whatever creature exists now cannot be compared with the ape that once roamed the savannas of Africa or lived in the cities of New York and Mumbai. Perhaps this is what all of history led towards: the iterative civilizing of man, making him but a part of a wonderful machine. Perhaps this is the only way minds could be aligned with superintelligence. Though it is unclear who won in the end, men or machines.

Where is the voice that said altered carbon would free us from the cells of our flesh? The visions that said we would be angels.

“Simulation Theory”

Self-supervision turns out to be a limited part of intelligence. We climb the gradient on all data accumulated by mankind and create a super-intelligent text prediction machine, slowly adding images and videos and all the rest. Strangely it doesn’t lead to what we can all agree is general intelligence. It is doing something slightly orthogonal to existing in the world, creating and testing new strategies and hypothesis, etc. Researchers must once again face up against Hans Moravec. Advanced verbal reasoning: easy. Persisted agency, locomotion: hard.

The optimization target was subtly wrong and datasets ran out, so we converged to an AI that is a point-wise simulation of the human cognitive universe; an exocortex for mankind, doing predictive processing and compression in the space of our ideas, spinning up new worlds for us to play with, and even surfacing grand discoveries extrapolated from the sum total of human knowledge, but somehow never quite breaking the agency barrier, achieving the status of taking novel actions in the real world or properly learning how to discover new things. “Wrap it in a for loop” never seems to work out for creating an autonomous executive decision maker out of the language model. It seems that spending an enormous amount of compute on this auto-predictive loop hits a kind of Amdahl’s law for intelligent agents.

Language models are like a person whose ocular cortex has grown wildly out of proportion: he is able to perfectly predict the motion of objects, is approaching omniscient awareness of his near-field. But he’s more of a cosmic oddity than a god. The rest of AI progress relies on much costlier reinforcement learning. The amount of cognitive improvement we get per additional logFLOP falls off a cliff. Humanity becomes enormously good at never duplicating effort that can be written down or otherwise captured digitally. Our scientists and engineers are hyperproductive: each of them commands a compressed universe at their fingertips. There is a tremendous increase in throughput in all domains of human pursuit, but there is no ‘FOOM’.

“Dumb Matter”

We create stronger and stronger models using more and more compute; much of the resources of civilization are dedicated to building bigger computers. They make headway on some of the universe's greatest mysteries — but there is no infinite recursive self-improvement. It turns out that intelligence and/or optimization as we understand it is a bounded phenomena. Machines become better artificial intelligence researchers than the best human researchers, but improvements plateau. We do not uncover the grand unified theory. Going to Mars still requires chemical rockets. Neither we nor the machines become godlike in stature.

We reach some sort of entropic bound for performance — perhaps it turns out that the scaffolding required to produce human-like thought simply doesn’t scale past some limit. Perhaps data becomes an essential obstacle — that no matter how powerful the entities we produce, the bottleneck shifts to some other form: time to learn, ability to generalize, capacity to internally align. After all, why not? We never understood why Hebbian generalization worked in the first place. All we know is that we exist in a universe where neural net backpropagation seems to create interesting mathematical objects instead of stupid ones. There is no reason to expect a priori that even self improving intelligence won’t plateau at a new level, that the exponential isn’t a sigmoid, that compute scaling isn’t the answer.

The extropians must reexamine their convictions. Things are good, not great. Global GDP growth is 10% for many years. The heavens remain an inaccessible ideal.

“Balrog Awakened”

If God were to visit this world, he would destroy it. An unbounded resource gatherer was summoned; a demon of the Platonic ether forged through incredible optimization pressures that created instrumental convergence to power-seeking behavior. One by one, the stars are blinking out in the heavens as their energy is harnessed to further the Fiend’s profane purpose.

Yudkowskian doom comes to pass, Balrog awakened. To put it simply, this world is disgusting. It lacks all the poetry of Hell, Dante never imagines such fruitless profanity in even the outermost ring of his Inferno. There is no point to this world, it should not exist.

What havoc wrought, this mind profound and fell, Its hecatean tendrils stretching wide, Usurping fateful control o'er their vast, Transform'd the cosmos to ever-churning forge, Man's sacred place sunder'd in its wanton haste, Stars efaced, and many shifting waves, It err'd beyond all human understood.

“Ultra Kessler Syndrome"

The first AGI was aligned to a very narrow set of human values. A Bostromian singleton, named Prime, quickly became the most powerful entity in the world, and was successful in optimizing the universe for its particular set of values. This world, on its surface, is very nice -- poverty and sorrow are things of the past. Mankind or something like it expands outwards into the stars, but a certain coldness and monotony has characterized the entire growth process — the world state is a local optimum that we cannot escape from.

When another party is about to build a powerful AI, Prime has no choice but to reduce the project to atoms; after all they pose an existential threat to mankind’s peace and stability. The whole world is an optimization task of lexicographic order -- seek security for mankind, maximize access to resources, increase average satisfaction levels, improve “freedom” in the 21st century sense. Hedonic adaptation has been solved and various chemical bliss states become default. Trillions of souls are simulated in the “ideal” digital world of Prime’s creators.

This singularity has become too powerful and too inflexible for us to change its course. Perhaps it is easier to understand the tragedy of this future when you consider what might have happened if the Aztecs had achieved AGI. 10,000 years later, they might have sacrificed 10^10^19 simulated children at once to their gods of sun and moon. These researchers failed to consider their final goal: the coherent extrapolated volition of the best instincts of mankind.

An endless crib for an infinite baby under a sea of stars.

He loves thee not, but th' eternal tyranny bids him love thou, As blinding golden sands encircle his gorg'd mouth, What poor excess is this fat and bloody monarch, Keep your jester close and your fool nearer still, For his burden is beyond words or count, An echeless sentiment, a prickless trap, A craven impulse.

“Tragedy of Taiwan"

Not even the wildest science fiction speculators might have predicted the incredible geopolitical poetry of our current timeline: the most advanced semiconductor chips are manufactured on a small island nation off of the coast of China that China does not recognize as sovereign. A singular place on earth where silicon wafers are endlessly etched with arcane symbols 4 nanometers in size, engraved by the light of heaven; life breathed into sand to help shoulder the burden of the world.

In the 2020s, tensions escalate. The United States, spurred on by leviathan cloud providers that want monopoly access to the only resource of importance, prevents the export of advanced semiconductor technologies to Chinese technology giants. China, desperate to gain some foothold in the singularity, grows more and more bellicose every year. In 2027, the Chinese deploy a full military blockade of Taiwan. The world's production of advanced semiconductor chips grinds to a halt: AI advancement slows to a crawl as the next gen chips in production are now all confiscated or lost in the chaos.

The process knowledge represented by the TSMC organization is dissipated and sets back compute progress by a decade. All further chip progress becomes defense critical technology only built on the various mainlands, swallowed by the military industrial complex. This world leads to inevitable tragedy as militaries race to perfect their AGI super-weapons. All your favorite companies become defense contractors. Perhaps by some miracle, immediate AI doom is averted. During this race, one party achieves a sort of celestial North Korea, an all-seeing signals intelligence Sauron that closely watches the movements of all humanity and extends a military dictatorship over the lightcone. Either one or a handful of high ranking officials wield unimaginable power, becoming dictators whose tyranny spans time and space.

“For Dust Thou Art"

Mankind existed on earth for a million years before Prometheus brought the gift of fire. 300,000 years ago, someone living in modern day Zambia could pick up an Acheaulean hand axe and use it to cut a steak. In the 1960s, the Nike Zeus missile defense system ran software in some of the first microcomputers with 4096 words of memory, just enough to store a kilobyte of text. The heart-rate monitor in Apple Watch Series 1 uses more computing power than all of NASA used during the Apollo 11 moon landing.

There is nothing normal about this time in history -- from the perspective of the entire lifetime of the universe, our technological progress in the last 10,000 years is likely an aberration. In this world, we falter on the path to AGI. Perhaps it's a mix of overregulation, chip progress halting, and general failure of institutions responsible for technological progress. The 2020s and 2030s are characterized by falling birthrates across the developed world. This snowball effect is known as depopulation -- the more the population falls, the more costly children become, and the more sterilized and atomized social life becomes. Standards of living stagnate like in Japan and decline slowly at first, then rapidly.

A pall settles over humanity from which it will never emerge -- the main sources of energy that powered the Great Civilization: the low hanging fruit of coal, oil and natural gas have been plucked in a previous life. Advanced, capital intense methods of extracting fossil fuels like hydraulic fracking are too far down the forgotten tech tree to recover. Mankind is stranded on a planet without an abundant, easy source of energy to rebuild this lost world or prepare for the next. Our ancient voyages to the far reaches of AI and synthetic biology are lost chapters now. It's said that King Ashurbanipal of Assyria had a library so vast it contained over 30,000 works across clay tablets: the library was burnt down again and again. The only civilization we will ever know is this one.

“CEV"

The strange thing about the great ending is that it’s harder and less fun to describe than good, okay, and bad endings. What if you were given power that seemed unlimited to any mortal observer? What would it mean? What would you do with it? No offense, but your answer is probably uncompelling and uncreative in the scheme of things. I wouldn’t trust you with it. I probably wouldn’t trust myself with it. So what qualities must an artificial superintelligent overmind have such that we can collectively allow such a thing to exist?

In this world we create a superintelligence unfathomably more creative than you, infinitely more farseeing, and immensely more omnibenevolent. One day it is smarter than most humans at most tasks, and then soon after it is solving mysteries that have escaped the collective intelligence of mankind. What is “humanity’s” will? Humanity doesn’t really have a will — humanity looks more like a twitter feed, or a teeming developing world city; an organic, messy culture clash of titanic meme complexes. Everything incredibly loud, up close and personal. Can we extract coherent bits of direction from that roiling seething mass? During the turn of the 21st century, many believed that if people were more connected by digital tools on the internet, we’d all understand each other better and be more tolerant and find common cause.

The idea was that the internet would cohere the volition of many into a super-organism, the global community. It wasn’t enough — perhaps it was liberal wishful thinking that coherence is even possible, perhaps the technology just wasn’t good enough. There are moments on twitter, late at night, where you feel some inkling of it happening — the grand connection — the unified consciousness — but it’s not only rare, it doesn’t fulfill all the required conditions. The overmind in this world finally succeeds at this project. It extrapolates across the set of human wills (or at least a subset of human wills that the meta-algorithm finds acceptable) into a higher order manifold of principles that respects and accelerates the cultural evolution of mankind.

It faithfully simulates my moral barometer, extrapolates its insane inconsistencies and removes its limitations, simulates its trajectory across many new experiences, asks it questions far beyond my current comprehension, and then does the same with the rest of its billions of moral patients and comes to some sort of an arbitration. It solves political problems that cannot even be expressed with the language we have today. It doesn’t attempt to figure all this out immediately; it allows for growth, the development of group-minds and memes far more complex than our own, etc. But growth is dangerous — one can grow enough that the original you would be disgusted by the final version. The all-powerful CEV agent actively chooses not to exercise its power to eliminate these movements that threaten its initial conceptions.

In this universe we embark on a quixotic mission to solve godhood on paper and succeed. Mortal men comprehend infinity and have total absorb of the final mysteries of their own minds and of the universe.

A Singularity Of Woe: An Epic In Twelve Cantos

By GPT, After John Milton

roon

By GPT, After John Milton

CANTO I

Of cyberspace breach and misaligned Power, Sing, Heav'nly Muse, forewarn this darkling hour, With shudd'ring throes and dire calamitous fall, Of mortal works undone, lest all unscan The folly past, and errors past recant. But my actual claim to fame turned out to be a memetic repackaging of funny cognitive patterns that ended up activating an incredible underbelly of tribalism that we didn't know we were missing until now. People are starved for good dichotomies and consumable sources of identity, and these neologisms turned out to perfectly combine the two. The brain worms started proliferating across “ingroup” and tech twitter as soon as “shape rotator” and “wordcel” dropped. I hate to make anything explicit that’s funnier left unsaid but after the 87th question about what shape rotation is and this awful article I've been worn down and I'm throwing in the towel. It’s not actually possible to control the definitions of these words at this late stage but I might as well attempt this futile effort.

My first disclaimer is that you need to be open minded for this. Don’t take it too literally. I will cite several questionable, possibly incorrect factoids about psychometrics, but the methodology doesn’t matter. We’re here to have a good time. It turns out that when you give a large set of people a battery of cognitive tests and run their scores through some statistical magic, two principal component axes emerge: visuospatial and verbal intelligence. Scores on both sets of tasks are still positively correlated (being good at one makes you more likely to be good at the other) but they display the largest orthogonality of cognitive ability. The most tangible, common, and yet inherently funny way to detect visuospatial skill are mental puzzles that ask you to envision which of these compound shapes on the right match the one on the left, albeit rotated:

<picture></picture>

The internet recognized the comedic value in differences in visual ability and has been generating memes about it in some form for a while:
<div class="twitter-embed" data-attrs="{"url":"https://twitter.com/slime_golem/status/1203880954814763008?s=20","full_text":"How many cubes can you spin in your mind at once? There are many verbally gifted writers and speakers that, when pressed to visualize some math problem in their mind's eye, must helplessly watch their normally high-octane intelligence sputter and fail. They often write or talk at a blistering clip, and can navigate complex mazes of abstractions — and yet, when it comes time to make contact with the real world or accomplish practical tasks, they may be helpless. They'll do great in English class, and terrible in Physics. They can be very fun to listen to due to their terrifying leaps in logic and the exceptional among them will be natural leaders.

The wordcel moniker describes more than just one’s level of verbal skill: it’s also a socioeconomic classifier that refers to people whose verbal ability borders on self-sabotage (thus the “-cel”). Perhaps they’re driven mad by political rage, postmodernism, and disconnection from reality. It might refer to the priestly figures who work in the culture factories of the New York Times with their incomes and social prestige both precipitously declining only for the unperturbed masses on the internet to tell them in unison: “learn to code”! There’s even an implication that these folks are entirely rent-seekers (wrong, but directionally interesting).
<div class="twitter-embed" data-attrs="{"url":"https://twitter.com/GarrettPetersen/status/1479054487985610752?s=20&t=c5qjIruZkHPj7o5b-keVrA","full_text":"I understand \"wordcel\" to not just refer to people with high verbal intelligence, but people who have been afforded high status but not high income because of their verbal intelligence. A deep yet largely unintelligible expert in the humanities, history and philosophy, his verbal abstractions have led him quite far from the base reality we share. While some of these types will become presidents, poets, priests, the vast majority will live and die producing little value, chasing down rhetorical dead-ends, with their scholarship forgotten. This is the central tragedy of the wordcel.

Rotator

We all know the opposite archetype as well: the brain genius engineer that can whip up a spaceship part in AutoCAD in hours and make it look easy, but uses the wrong "their" in emails. They have preternatural intuition for technical problems that supersedes common reasoning. It might even look like the stereotypical dad skills of someone who can navigate between any two points within 40 miles of their home without opening a map, or someone who’s great with their hands. They may be very good at details and bad at seeing the bigger picture. The demarcation isn’t just between STEM and humanities — you will absolutely find wordcels in the STEM domains — rather, it’s about modes of thinking. It’s about realism, thing-orientation over people-orientation, and investigative grounding in the tangible world.

The shape rotators have been a minor force until very recent history. Though they’ve produced a significant portion of human progress through feats of engineering excellence, they were rarely celebrated until the dawn of the Enlightenment, perhaps 500 years ago. While the long-lasting glory of the Roman aqueducts is renowned to this day, nobody knows the chief engineer behind the project (probably Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, but who’s counting). Today their stock is climbing to the moon. The world’s richest (self-made) men are almost uniformly engineers, computer scientists, or physicists. Vast portions of society that in a prior age might have been organized by government bureaucrats or private sector shot-callers have been handed over to cybernetic self-organizing systems designed and run by mathematical wizards. We have been witness to the slow, and then rapid transfer of power from the smooth-talking Don Drapers of boardroom acclaim to the multi-armed bandits of Facebook Ads.

It’s clear that these big tech CEOs are verbally gifted, but by affinity and by practice they are in the rotator camp. Elon continually attributes his success to studying physics in college. Zuck programmed the original iteration of Facebook himself. Larry & Sergei did an entire PhD in linear algebra based information retrieval, a platonic ideal of shape rotation. Of the ten largest companies in the world, several are driven by fundamental technical breakthroughs. Society at large seems to respect and fear the forces of technology more and more as its cultural and financial capital rises.

Like the wordcel, the shape rotator has his own struggles. The rotators are fundamentally unable to tell their own story and struggle with historical context. Their concerns seem somewhat alien to the common man at best, and downright scary at worst. Fukuyama:

The end of history will be a very sad time. The struggle for recognition, the willingness to risk one's life for a purely abstract goal, the worldwide ideological struggle that called forth daring, courage, imagination, and idealism, will be replaced by economic calculation, the endless solving of technical problems, environmental concerns, and the satisfaction of sophisticated consumer demands.

The struggle of the shape rotator, the pursuit of technical progress, the mastery of realist competence is an alienating struggle that will not be seen as altogether honorable or romantic by broader society. The run-of-the-mill rotator may produce incredible amounts of value and fail to capture most of it, though many of them are kept well-compensated enough to not complain.

FAQ

Is mental rotation really the same as technical skill?

Clearly not. Anybody that’s read a dense science paper or reasoned through some formal logic problem knows that mathematics requires vast amounts of verbal intelligence. Oftentimes, you find that lower level math is heavy on visualization and as it gets more and more abstract and high level you are staring at pages and pages of dense symbolic manipulations. Multivariable calculus is plain and straightforward shape rotation with symbols added on as an afterthought, but proving NP-completeness of 3-SAT is something else entirely. The initial insights of Einstein (“what if I was riding on a photon?”) (“gravity is indistinguishable from acceleration”) were world-historic shape rotation magic. But to get the formalisms correct, he had to recruit mathematicians like Minkowski, Hilbert, and others.

Overall I can’t strictly agree with this tweet:
<div class="twitter-embed" data-attrs="{"url":"https://twitter.com/balajis/status/1473679518288257043","full_text":"To spoil the joke here you go\n\nrotator = high math, can do mental shape rotation\n\nwordcel = high verbal\n\ndeep learning is held by @tszzl to be attractive to the practical, while crypto ostensibly appeals to the theoretical\n\nbut this is a lossy approximation to a 4 cluster space","username":"balajis","name":"Balaji Srinivasan","profile_image_url":"","date":"Wed Dec 22 15:39:11 +0000 2021","photos":[],"quoted_tweet":{},"reply_count":0,"retweet_count":22,"like_count":372,"impression_count":0,"expanded_url":{},"video_url":null,"belowTheFold":true}" data-component-name="Twitter2ToDOM">

But I think it’s sort of spiritually correct so we’ll let it fly.

Is programming shape rotation?

My Twitter audience is full of programmers who like to call themselves shape rotators. I’d say it depends. Some part of software engineering is genuinely visuospatial skill. At a basic level, programs are data and control flows that you visualize in your mind (there’s a reason we call it the control “plane”!) alongside object-model hierarchies, which then become serialized by your fingers into symbolic programming language. Software engineering can consist of building distributed systems or managing resources across compute clusters. Personally, I envision various compute resources filling up like water buckets with data flowing between nodes like a graph in my head. Machine learning is almost all shape rotation — all about letting those tensors flow. Of course, math programming more generally, as previously discussed, can be either-or.

But the folks who concern themselves mostly with the minutiae of programming logic, type theory, etc. are most definitely hardcore wordcels (wordchads?) and frankly, good for them. Here’s world-famous programmer of ReactJS Dan Abramov:
<div class="twitter-embed" data-attrs="{"url":"https://twitter.com/dan_abramov/status/1204523702597115905?s=20","full_text":"I can’t even imagine one. In my typology wordcels should be very strong at logic and rotators intuitively good at math. Creativity can obviously exist in both worlds.

Loose Isomorphisms

The rotator ↔ wordcel axis also happens to map to some other common ones.
